Drumless Backing Track Funk in 7/8 Time (120 BPM)

from Backing Tracks For Drums: Odd Times by Sean Armitage Music

/

about

This drumless backing track is in one of the more common odd times, 7/8. But if you're here, you're probably familiar with 7/8 time.

If not, what helped me was to break down this meter into groups of 2's and 3's. I'll do my best to explain: think of any odd time in groups of 2's and 3's when you're counting, and it'll get a whole lot simpler. It's easier to count, and you'll also start to hear the 'swing' of it if you accent the "one" when you're counting aloud.

I read somewhere to count it as "ap-ple" (for the 2 group) and "gall-op-ing" (for the 3).

The reason for these words (I assume) is that they are very easy to speak and require less effort than physical saying "one, two, one two, one two, three". That way more energy is devoted to making sure you're playing in time.

This concept can be applied to ANY odd time with an eighth note feel.

Here I'm doing ap-ple ap-ple gall-op-ing (1-2,1-2,1-2-3) to get my seven. But you can break it up anyway you want.

I'm open to comments/messages asking for further explanation!
